There is nothing worse than Ignorance.

There is nothing worse than ignorance, which is why I went to the lecture given by Manan Mirza on Tuesday April 29th.  I love to learn about different cultures and people, which is why I wanted to go to Mirza’s speech. His lecture was titled Understanding Pakistan. I wasn’t sure what the speech was going to entail I just figured it would be interesting and something different. I don’t know much about Pakistan which is why I wanted to go to this lecture.

Mirza started off his lecture by stating that Pakistan was just named the most dangerous nation by newsweek. This was something I new nothing of and found rather interesting. Mirza went on to say that we were going to be looking at Pakistan’s history and how it got to where it is today.

Mizra wanted to clear up a common misconception that many people believe that Pakistan is a middle eastern country. Actually it isn’t. It is actually a Southern Asian country  that used to be part of India. Today all that is left of Pakistan is what once was West Pakistan. The Eastern part of Pakistan is now Bangladesh. The countries that surround Pakistan are Iran, India, Afghanistan, and China.

I was surprised to learn that Pakistan isn’t all desert. It actually has mountains, forests, tropical zones, and surprisingly there is snow. Pakistan is inhabited mostly of Punjabis, then Pathans, followed by Sundnis, Baluchis, and Muhajirs. There are three main religions in Pakistan which consist of  Muslim, Sunni, and Shi’ite. He told us about Pakistan’s development to become a country. Pakistan recently declared their independence from India in 1947. This was known as the Independence Movement.

After the end of the revolution Jinnah became the first leader of the new country that they named Pakistan. When translated into English Pakistan means Land of the Pure. Pakistan is mostly a military country. It has the seventh largest military which is surprising because it is a small country. I am very glad that I went to Mizra’s speech because I found it enlightening and interesting. It was fun to learn something new.
